Protego-Nepal was created by a group of concerned Nepalese citizens in 2006. The group struck by the large number of children begging on the streets, developed a dialogue with some foreigners from different countries who visited Nepal in 2006, concerning these children and how they could be helped.
It was determined that although Non-Government Agencies (NGO’s) existed in some of Nepal’s larger cities, many were closed down by the government for improper behavior by the staff, mis-management of funds, or loss of funding. Most NGO’s were charitable foundations and relied on financial aid to survive. Others were affiliated with the United Nations or other charitable organizations around the world trying to help these children. The founders visited many of the agencies and also orphanages in and around Kathmandu. As the group learned more and more about the existing services, or lack thereof, it was determined that a ‘self-sustaining’ safe house would be a more secure organization after initial funding was acquired.
The following ideas and rationale were used to create this project idea:
- Abused and abandoned street children needed a ‘safe” place to stay.
- It was determined, after much discussion that the group did not want to rely on income after the initial funding was secured.
- Reliance on continued charity sends the wrong message, we feel to the children staying in the safe house.
- As a source of income it was decided to grow mushrooms to be sold to restaurants in the greater Kathmandu area. One mushroom hut can generate about $5,000USD per year. The organic greens, raised beds will bring in another $25,00 per year. If we can establish eight (8) mushrooms huts it would provide $40,000 USD per year for the project house.
These children would also be learning a marketable skill and take pride in being self reliant and proud of what they are accomplishing.
As all of this was formulated in the group’s mind it was determined to establish a Non-profit organization in Nepal which was done in 2006. In Denmark a non profit organization, Teamwork Nepal (http://www.teamworknepal.org), has adopted Protego-Nepal’s program and working very hard for funding.
