Welcome To Protegonepal

front

Protego-Nepal was created by a group of concerned Nepalese citizens in 2006. The group struck by the large number of children begging on the streets, developed a dialogue with some foreigners from different countries who visited Nepal in 2006,  concerning these children and how they could be helped.

It was determined that although Non-Government Agencies (NGO’s) existed in some of Nepal’s larger cities, many were closed down by the government for improper behavior by the staff, mis-management of funds, or loss of funding. Most NGO’s were charitable foundations and relied on financial aid to survive. Others were affiliated with the United Nations or other charitable organizations around the world trying to help these children. The founders visited many of the agencies and also orphanages in and around Kathmandu. As the group learned more and more about the existing services, or lack thereof, it was determined that a ‘self-sustaining’ safe house would be a more secure organization after initial funding was acquired.

The following ideas and rationale were used to create this project idea:

  • Abused and abandoned street children needed a ‘safe” place to stay.
  • It was determined, after much discussion that the group did not want to rely on income after the initial funding was secured.
  • Reliance on continued charity sends the wrong message, we feel to the children staying in the safe house.
  • As a source of income it was decided to grow mushrooms to be sold to restaurants in the greater Kathmandu area. One mushroom hut can generate about $5,000USD per year. The organic greens, raised beds will bring in another $25,00 per year. If we can establish eight (8) mushrooms huts it would provide $40,000 USD per year for the project house.

These children would also be learning a marketable skill and take pride in being self reliant and proud of what they are accomplishing.

As all of this was formulated in the group’s mind it was determined to establish a Non-profit organization in Nepal which was done in 2006. In Denmark a non profit organization, Teamwork Nepal (http://www.teamworknepal.org), has adopted Protego-Nepal’s program and working very hard for funding.

Politics Happening

You would think when a Honest, Descent Charity comes along to help poor needy and helpless children that everyone would be happy.

You would think you would get support, we have found out this is not the case.

We just want our followers, our supporters and those working hard that we will continue with our Integrity and our Ethics held high.

We will not make our Charity into a Cause that someone else makes money from, all the money goes to the children, that’s our gaurantee.

A Future of Begging…….or not?

The Street Kids of Nepal

PROTEGO NEPAL PROGRAM OUTLINE

Objective:

The objective of Protego Nepal is to remove 10 abandoned boys from the streets of Kathmandu.  They will be put into a SELF-SUSTAINING ‘Safe House’ where shelter, food, clothing, health care and education will be provided in a caring and supervised environment.  It is the goal to raise mushrooms and organic vegetables for sale to Kathmandu’s many restaurants and hotels. The mushroom huts, when fully built and stocked, will bring in about $2000 a year.  It is hoped we can have at least 8 of these huts which will generate $16,000 a year and make the “safe house” self-sustaining. Because girls make up only 10% of the street kids we are focusing on the boys. If, however, a girl is in need of our help we shall revise and accommodate as needed.

Shelter:

Initially the boys will be housed in a rented house which can accommodate 10 boys and a staff of three (3).  The staff will include a Manager/Director and two (2) others to assist in running the home.

Food:

The boys will be provided with two (2) full meals a day (morning and evening) and a light mid-day meal.

Health Care:

Each boy will be given a complete physical, eye exam, and dental examination upon entering the house.  Each boy will get a yearly physical and dental check-up.  It is hoped the ‘Safe House’ will have a volunteer doctor and dentist who will serve as needed for the boys.

Clothing:

The boys will be provided with clothes appropriate for winter and summer.

School uniforms will also be provided as the boys return to school.

Education:

Many boys will need remedial teaching, particularly in reading, as so many are illiterate.  This will be done in house before they are enrolled in school. The ‘Safe House’ hopes to be affiliated with one school. All school expenses will be covered by the ‘Safe House.’

Goals:

It is goal of Protego Nepal to put as many street kids as we can back into society as responsible, educated citizens.  We would like to see the boys through their high school years and then assist in finding scholarships for college or see them through a trade school of their choice.

Eventually, it is hoped to acquire land and build a housing and educational facility to accommodate 25 boys.

Funding:

We are in need of start-up money and it is our hope we will find corporate sponsors around the globe to fund this project with ongoing contributions.  It is estimated that the cost to run the program with 10 boys will be $40,000 annually.
